Whenever you need to open your file in Documents to work with it or you simply want to make sure your file is stored there safe, you can send a copy of the file to the Documents app from other apps using the Open in dialogue.
If there is no Documents app in the 'Open In' menu
The steps are listed in order, so start with the first one, see if that helps, and then continue to the next one if it doesn't.
Step 1: Make sure you follow the needed steps to open a file in Documents
- Open the file in a third-party app you work with (e.g. Safari) and tap the Actions button (in Safari, scroll down the PDF to reveal the toolbar).
- Tap Copy to Documents.
Note: Only files can be exported to Documents; notes or web pages cannot be shared, they need to be converted to files first.
Step 2: Check the 'More' button
If the Documents app is not among the available apps, please check the 'More' button:
- Scroll the list of apps until you see the More button and tap it.
- Tap Edit in the upper right.
- Enable the toggle for Documents and disable it for the apps you do not need.
- Restart your iPhone or iPad.
Step 3: Make sure the latest iOS version is used
Check if the latest iOS version is in use on your device since the way the extensions work relies on the system:
- Go to iOS Settings of your device > General.
- Check if there's an update in Software Update.
Save files to a specific folder in the Documents app
You can also save files to a specific folder in the Documents app (e.g. when saving the PDF file from Safari) using the Files app. For this follow the steps below:
- Open the file in a third-party app you work with (e.g. Safari) and tap the Actions button (in Safari, scroll down the PDF to reveal the toolbar).
- Tap Save to Files.
- When the Files app is launched, tap the Documents extension in the list of apps and select the folder you would like to save the file to. As a result, the file will be saved to the selected folder of the Documents app.
Note: If Documents is not in the list of extensions in the Files app, open the Files app > 'Browse' view, tap Edit in the top right corner, enable Documents toggle in the list of Locations, tap Done. Now you will have access to the local files and folders in Documents via the Files app.
Tip: You can use our own mechanism, Extension, instead of the system Open In option - for this, simply tap Save to Documents under the sharing options. Learn more about the feature here.
